If you are planning to transform a room in your home into a study, you may be looking for information which will help you to make the right choices when it comes to the interior design. This article will explore 3 things you should consider when designing a study.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important things you will need to think about. When in your study, it is likely you will spend a lot of time reading, writing or using a computer. Doing any of these activities under inadequate lighting can cause eye strain, which can lead to headaches, blurred vision, and poor concentration. As well as ensuring that the main ceiling lights are bright enough to illuminate the entire room, you should also consider investing in a desk lamp or reading light which will allow you to focus light on your book, computer, or note pad.

Desk space

The desk in your study is the centre piece around which everything else should be built. There are two things you need to consider when looking for a study desk. The surface area of the desktop and the amount of storage space. While you will be limited by the size of the room, it is always best to maximise both the size of the desktop and the amount of storage. If you are limited by the size of the room, look for a desk which has fold out desk space. This type of furniture doesn't take up too much space when it is not in use but allows you to maximise the size of the desk when you need to spread out your papers and notes.

Bookshelves

Finally, you should consider how you will install the bookshelves you need to store your library. If the room has alcoves, you may wish to have built-in bookshelves made which fill these spaces. The benefit of choosing to do this over freestanding bookshelves is that they can be manufactured to run from the floor to the ceiling, which helps to make full use of the amount of space available. If you invest in free standing bookshelves, you should ensure that they are attached to the wall with a bracket, to prevent them from toppling over.
